Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome

In early 2026, PCOS got a name change. It’s now known as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome - this change was long overdue.

Our menopause and sexual medicine training includes helping women navigate Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS).

PMOS is a metabolic condition that is a chronic condition needs it means managing for the duration of your life. It does not simply end after menopause, because PMOS increases individuals risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, and needs careful attention throughout ones life.

Treatment and management is dependent on a) your goals and b) your health risks.

Our 5 pillar’s of treatment for PMOS include:

  1. Uterine lining protection from overgrowth. People with PMOS or who do not ovulate regularly can be at increased risk for uterine cancer.

  2. Restore ovulation if not peri/menopausal. This could be for fertility purposes, but it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes when ovulation is restored, the metabolic pictures improves.

  3. Manage symptoms such as mental health, acne, abnormal hair growth/loss, weight, or whatever it is that is bothering you.

  4. Improve metabolic health. Risk for type 2 diabetes, obesity and visceral fat is higher in those with PMOS. We will work together to understand your risk, help manage blood sugars, help improve your cholesterol and manage your blood pressure. This can be done through lifestyle alone or medications.

  5. Reduce long-term health risks. People with PMOS are 1.5-2.5x more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, 4x more likely to develop non-alcoholic fatty liver, and 10x more likely to develop sleep apnea.

“I’ve never felt more seen and heard by a healthcare provider than I have with Christina. I was moved to happy tears when I realized that the seemingly small issues I had been dealing with could actually be addressed—and in ways that previous providers never considered. Christina is incredibly personable and friendly. She listens with genuine empathy, and you never feel rushed. She treats you as a whole person, not just a collection of symptoms. I wholeheartedly recommend her to all my friends who are navigating midlife health concerns. I’ve made her my primary care provider and appreciate that she can refer me to specialists within my insurance network. The choice was easy once I experienced the exceptional level of care and support she offers.”
